90% of smokers start before they are 20 years old because teens experiment with adult taboos. After 100 cigarettes, 94% of teens lose some ability to say no to the next one, they are becoming addicted. Is vaping interrupting smoking uptake?

CA grade 12 smokers

Grade 12 smokers are the next adult smokers! A 35% drop in grade 12 smoking rates is very significant! If vaping was a gateway to smoking, we would see an increase in the smoking rates. Instead the youth smoking rates are dropping. This suggests that vaping may be reducing the uptake of smoking in youth.

In 2017, 15.6% of grade 10-12 students had one puff or more 30 days; an increase of 65% since 2015. 1.8% vaped daily versus 2.2% smoked daily. Daily smokers dropped 27% from 3% to 2.2% since 2015. Vaping up, smoking down.
