Royal College of Physicians
The Royal College of Physicians reviewed the science on vaping. 📚📚
In April 2016, they released the report, Nicotine without Smoke:
harm to health and society
of e-cigarettes at about 5%
of the burden caused by
Workers in a 🍿popcorn butter flavouring factory, (diacetyl was a main ingredient) had higher cases of “popcorn lung”.
A study found diacetyl in some eliquids, The amount was 750x less than found cigarettes.
Headlines read: “Vaping Causes Popcorn Lung!”
based on evidence
Vaping Advocacy and Education Project (VAEP) is a not-for-profit run by registered nurses.
We dedicate our 🎓 skills, ⏲️ time and resources into developing vaping learning tools to promote autonomy; specifically informed decision making.
social cost CA
The last report on the smoking costs to Canadian taxpayers was conducted in 2012. 🔎
Total cost: $16.4 billion, including:
💸 Long-term disability costs: $6.8 billion
💸 Healthcare costs: $6.5 billion
💸 Fires: $74 million
vaping is less harmful
Smoking is the most preventable cause of disease & death in North America.
Everyone knows someone they care about that smokes.
😃Vaping is 95% safer than smoking.😃
Don’t you think a smoker’s social circle should support vaping?
deaths in Canada
Smoking kills 2 out of 3 smokers when used as intended.
Vaping is 5% the risk of smoking and uniquely satisfies the ritualistic smoking behaviours.
If someone you love smokes, encourage them to learn more about vaping as an alternative.
👉 Spirometry data, airway hype-responsiveness, exacerbations and subjective signs & symptoms ALL showed improvements.
Of the 8 that were still smoking, their dual mean went from of 22 cigarettes a day to 2.
Jack Boomer quote
1 of 4 Canadians are obese…because adults like flavours.🍒
Alcohol comes in 1000’s of flavours…because adults like flavours.🥥
To make vaping attractive to current smokers, eliquid comes in many flavours…because adults like flavours.🍰
RN’s are responsible to:
👉 promote harm reduction.
👉 stay current in credible evidence.
👉 support informed decision making.
👉 advocate for vulnerable populations such as smokers.
👉 advocate for change that improves public health outcomes.
CA daily smokers drop
📉A 35% drop in daily smoking in grade 12 smokers is very significant!
📉If vaping was a gateway to smoking, we would see an increase in smoking rates.
📉Instead it is dropping…is vaping reducing the uptake of smoking in youth?
The Canadian Cancer Society requested the gov’t make vaping less enjoyable for smokers by banning flavours. 🍰
They cite a 45% increase in youth smoking from the Hammond study as their rational.😱
Statistics Canada reported a DECREASE in youth smoking.🤔
Who are vaping?
1% of people that never smoked vape.
15% of smokers and 13% of ex-smokers vape.
The data illustrates that SMOKERS are vaping to either quit smoking or stay quit. 😃
The focus 👀 needs to switch to harm reduction and away from the 1%.
The risk of vaping versus smoking is 5% but how many people actually know that? 🤔
Looking at this graph, it suggests that those that are better informed about vaping are choosing harm reduction.
34% of smokers & 62% of vapers are correct! ✔️
MAIN reason for vaping
Youth have always messed with adult taboos like drinking 🍸, sex💘, smoking🚬 and now vaping.
The narrative is that they try vaping because of flavours. 🙄
The reason is normal human development, not flavours!
But flavours DO help smokers switch!
Vaping is a “disruptive technology” in that it replaces other smoking reduction methods.
The pharmaceutical industry makes smoking cessation aids…and drugs for all those smoking related diseases.
So, why don’t people know the truth about vaping…?
US vaping epidemic
An epidemic is a disease with very high rates in a population. 📈
Youth that used a vape in the last 30 days:
– 36% used 1-2 days,
– 17% used 3-5 days,
– 9% used 6-9 days,
– 10% used 10-19 days,
– 5% used 20-29 days.
It was suggested that we not tell people that vaping is 95% safer than smoking because we might be seen as promoting vaping to youth but we think smokers should know.
We promote harm reduction as per our code of ethics & will continue to tell the truth.
US reduced youth uptake
90% of smokers start before they are 20 years old because teens experiment with adult taboos.
After 100 cigarettes, 94% of teens lose some ability to say no to the next one, they are becoming addicted.
Is vaping interrupting smoking uptake?
9 of 10 improved health
Smoking causes adverse health consequences.
The good news is that when you stop smoking, the toxic chemicals are no longer entering the body.
This means health will improve with quitting smoking.
Vaping significantly lowers these toxins.
San Fran ban
Harm reduction started in the 80’s AIDS crisis.
The gay population started using condoms to lower their risk.
It’s ironic that a city with a high gay population bans harm reduction for the most preventable cause of disease & death of its constituents! 🌉
US youth daily smokers
9 of 10 smokers start before 20.
94% of youth that smoke 100 cigarettes, lose some ability to say no to the next one – they are becoming addicted.
Vaping may be interrupting those 100 cigarettes considering their smoking rates are dropping.
flavours are key components
Alberta offers over 9000 flavours of alcohol…because adults like flavours! 🍷🍸🍺
We have rising obesity rates…because adults like flavours!🍩🍫🍒
There are thousands of eliquid flavours…because adults like flavours! 🍑🍰🍮
CA significant drop in smoking rates
This graph shows the trend in current smoking rates of 15-19 year olds over 16 years.
Within 3 years of vaping being introduced, the smoking rate decreased at a level not seen in 14 years!😃
Is vaping preventing youth smoking uptake?
GB youth vaping
In Great Britain, vaping is recognized as a significant harm reduction strategy and is promoted by Public Health England. 💂
Yet, less than 2% of 11-18 year olds vape more than once a week.
WHERE is the youth vaping epidemic in Great Britain❓❓❓
Top health agencies in the US tested for hazardous chemicals in the air in a vape shop with active vaping.
The vast majority of chemicals were not even detected!
Friends of vapers can feel comfortable around vaping and support smokers making the switch.
there’s an epidemic
The REAL epidemic in relation to vaping is the smoking epidemic. Vaping is a significant harm reduction strategy for current smokers. Period.
US youth ever tried
In 2017, about the same amount of US youth had tried vaping as smoking.
Maybe the youth that have a curiosity about inhalants try both.
Consider that the smoking rate is dropping, vaping maybe interrupting smoking addiction.
top 9 toxins
“People smoke for nicotine but they die from tar.”
WHO prioritized the 9 most toxic chemicals found in tobacco smoke for reduction. 🔬
Vaping significantly reduces or eliminates these toxic chemicals! ⚗️
CA ever tried
👉 Tobacco smoke contains over 7000 chemicals: 1500 cause disease and 69 cause cancer.
👉 Vaping is 5% the risk of smoking.
👉 35% of grade 10-12 students have ever smoked and 33% have ever vaped.
👉 Is there a smoking epidemic?
quit rate 21%
Smoking is the most common addiction in North America.
Half of smokers try to quit every year; yet only 5% quit of those quit attempts achieve long term success.
Vaping may be a better solution for smokers because it is inhaled like smoke.
Most of us are familiar with and support harm reduction such as seat belts or bike helmets.
Smoking is the most preventable cause of disease and death in North America!
It’s hard to quit smoking, so maybe harm reduction is the answer. 😃
US accelerated drop in smoking
Since vaping has been introduced into mainstream, youth are experimenting with vaping.
The thing is that the US youth smoking rates are dropping at rates not seen since at least 2001.
Vaping could be preventing new smokers!
🎈Thank you AQV & CVA for their dedication in addressing the oppressive laws against vaping in Quebec. 🎈
“The problem with the current restrictions is that the public do not distinguish between smoking and vaping,”, Justice Daniel Dumais.
CA the vaping epidemic
In 2017, 14.6% of grade 10-12 students used a vape in the past 30 days; an increase of 64% since 2015.
1.8% vape daily versus 2.2% smoke daily.
Daily smokers dropped 27% from 3% to 2.2% since 2015.
Vaping up, smoking down.📉
Over decades, scientists were paid millions of dollars 💰 to add different chemicals to tobacco and test the results.
After much research the modern cigarette was born.
Cigarettes are the most addictive product in North America.
The standard scientific tool for measuring the harm from drug use is the MCDA (multi-criteria decision analysis). Experts compared 12 different sources of nicotine using the MCDA. The most harmful source were cigarettes so they were given the value of 100%. The other 11 sources show the relative risk of harm compared to smoking.
